Originally from the Chicago area, Colin and Betty both moved to Denver Colorado where they were married in 1981. In addition to their primary careers (Colin, as an IT Specialist for the Depart of Defense and Betty, an Commercial Underwriter and Marketing Director for a major insurer), the couple started planning events fund raising events for non-profit organizations in the Denver area. In 1983, they included Betty’s love for travel and CB Jones Travel and Events soon became one of the areas most recognized African American travel and event planning agencies.
This home-based agency vowed to “Make every vacation the vacation of a Lifetime, every event all it can be”. As event planning activity increased, so did the travel side of the business. The business gave the duo the opportunity to function as tour guides, accompanying clients to interesting destinations in the U.S. and abroad.
In 2003 they partnered with another couple to create the travel consortium, Travel Professionals Of Color. TPOC is now a membership driven, national association, designed to provide training and support for travel agents and other travel professionals of color. As the first of its kind, membership easily grew to as many as 300 members from the U.S., Canada, Europe, Africa, Bermuda and throughout the Caribbean and South America. Today, TPOC still remains as a viable source for information and an excellent platform for networking and support to other travel agencies, industry suppliers and vendors.
Balancing CB Jones Travel and TPOC is quite an undertaking which was made easier when they both retired from their regular 9 to 5’s. Even though their hours are much longer now, they enjoy working together and with so many interesting people. The icing on the cake is their opportunity visit and learn so much from their travels to many exciting and exotic destinations in the U.S. and around the world.
